Daryl R. Van Tongeren

Dr. Daryl R. Van Tongeren is a Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Frost Center for Social Science Research at Hope College. A social psychologist, he leverages psychological science to explore some of life's biggest questions. He has more than 250 scientific publications, and four books, on topics spanning meaning in life, religion, and virtues, and his work has been supported by numerous external grants. Recently, his research has focused on religious "dones" and religious deidentification, culminating in his recent book, Done: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion. He has won numerous international awards for his research and been named Fellow at several professional organizations. His work has been highlighted on Hidden Brain, the New York Times, the BBC, The Atlantic, and many other media outlets and podcasts, and he regularly consults on a wide variety of projects. He is an associate editor at The Journal of Positive Psychology and a consulting editor at Psychology of Religion and Spirituality.
