WELCOME TO THE NONES PROJECT

Who are the Nones, and what do they believe?

One-third of Americans claim no religious affiliation. That's 100 million people, an unprecendented number, that has changed the landscape of religious life in the United States.

Even without religion, many Nones make meaning in their lives. Some do so by more traditional means — like believing in God and praying — while others do it in less traditional habits and practices.

THE FOUR TYPES

In the first large-scale survey of American Nones, we found that non-religious Americans generally fall into one of four categories. NiNOs look a lot like religious Americans in their beliefs and practices. SBNRs are interested in alternative forms of spirituality. Dones want to live their lives without any connection to religious elements. Zealous Atheists think that religion is bad for the world and want others to know it.
